Understanding endometriosis

Understanding endometriosis - ways out of the pain

What conservative therapy can achieve

Endometriosis affects an estimated one in ten women of childbearing age - and yet often remains undetected for years. Many sufferers experience severe pain, feel misunderstood and are severely restricted in their everyday life, sexuality and quality of life. Today, there are effective, conservative treatment approaches - beyond surgery and hormone treatment.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which tissue that resembles the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. These so-called endometriosis lesions react to hormonal fluctuations and can lead to a variety of symptoms:

  • Chronic or cycle-dependent lower abdominal pain

  • Pain during sexual intercourse

  • Bladder or bowel problems

  • Unfulfilled desire to have children

  • Fatigue, depressive moods and vegetative imbalances

Important to know: The severity of the pain is not necessarily related to the extent of the endometriosis lesions. This means that even if the extent is small, there can be severe symptoms - particularly due to central pain processing and vegetative involvement.

Conservative therapy - what helps?

While surgical interventions and hormone therapies may be necessary in certain situations, conservative treatment is becoming increasingly important - especially in chronic cases. The focus here is on pain regulation, everyday function and quality of life.

1. Pain therapy for endometriosis: more than just "pelvic floor training"

In modern therapy, the focus is not only on local treatment, but also on the integration of visceral, fascial and neurovegetative connections. Possible treatment goals:

  • Tension regulation in the pelvic and abdominal area

  • Decongestion and mobilization of fascial and visceral structures

  • Improvement of pelvic floor function (both tone reduction and activation)

  • Pain relief through neuromodulating techniques

At Hockenholz, we combine manual techniques with sensorimotor stimulation, educational elements and mindful movement work.

2. medical yoga & mindful movement

Medical yoga is a valuable part of therapy for endometriosis - especially in terms of vegetative regulation and body awareness. The goals:

  • Activation of the parasympathetic system (vagus tone)

  • Gentle mobilization and improvement of blood circulation in the pelvis

  • Reduction of stress and pain spirals

  • Mindful interaction with your own body

Our attitude: No performance thinking, no "perseverance" - but a space for relief, self-awareness and stability.

3. Understanding pain - influencing pain

Educational support is a central element of conservative endometriosis therapy. In our pain coaching and further training courses, we show:

  • How chronic pain develops in the nervous system

  • how hormonal, psychological and somatic factors influence each other

  • how pain is exacerbated by fear, stress and loss of control - and how we can break this cycle

Empowerment instead of helplessness: those who understand pain can actively influence it.

4. Interdisciplinary support & psychosomatic aspects

Endometriosis affects the body, psyche and social roles in equal measure. That is why we at Hockenholz work with a biopsychosocial model:

  • Mindful conversation

  • Activating resources instead of focusing on deficits

  • Sexuality and intimacy as part of the treatment

  • Collaboration with gynecologists, pain therapistsand psychologists

Conclusion: Endometriosis needs more than a standard solution

Chronic pain in endometriosis is real - and it needs a holistic, evidence-based and empathetic approach to treatment. The combination of modern physiotherapy, medical yoga, educational support and psychosomatic expertise offers many women a path to greater self-efficacy, quality of life and inner stability.
