Non-specific back pain - update

Non-specific back pain
Update on conservative therapy

What modern pain therapy can really achieve

Back pain is one of the most common complaints in modern society - and it is the main reason for sick leave. In over 85% of cases, the cause remains unspecific despite intensive diagnostics. However, it is precisely in these cases that modern conservative therapy shows considerable progress - if it is interdisciplinary, individualized and evidence-based.

What does "non-specific back pain" mean?

Non-specific back pain is present when no clear structural cause (such as a herniated disc, fracture or inflammatory disease) can be diagnosed. The symptoms are usually functional, biomechanical, neurophysiological or psychosocial - or a combination of these. This may initially sound like an unclear situation, but it is a great therapeutic opportunity: because without a dangerous cause, the way is open for targeted, activating treatment.

From passive to active: the paradigm shift in therapy

For a long time, back pain = rest. Today we know that rest is counterproductive. The current guidelines recommend

  • Early exercise

  • Targeted education (improve understanding of pain)

  • Multimodal concepts with exercise, physiotherapy, psychotherapy and educational elements

  • Individual increase in activity instead of standard programs

At Hockenholz | Therapie & Training | Weiterbildung we take these approaches and combine them with many years of experience in physiotherapy, training therapy and medical yoga - always with the individual situation of each person in mind.

Conservative therapy update: What really helps?

An overview of current evidence-based strategies:

1. Pain therapy: more than just manual techniques

Modern physiotherapy/occupational therapy/sports therapy focuses on functional analysis, movement training and dosed increases in exercise. Passive measures such as massage or heat therapy can have a supportive effect - but are not the main focus. Instead, the focus is on empowerment through movement.

Exemplary techniques:

  • Functional strength training

  • dynamic mobilization exercises

  • Core stability in everyday movements

2. Medical yoga & sensorimotor training

At Hockenholz, we combine classic physiotherapy strategies with well-founded, non-esoteric yoga. Medical yoga works:

  • Regulates the autonomic nervous system

  • Pain-relieving through improved body awareness

  • Stabilizing through controlled movement control

This integrative approach supports people with chronic, stress-related back pain in particular.

3. Psychoeducation & understanding pain

Change begins in the mind. Those who understand pain deal with it differently. In our training courses and therapy sessions, we teach:

  • the basics of pain physiology

  • the difference between pain and tissue damage

  • How fear and avoidance can increase pain

Patients learn to see themselves as an active part of the solution - and not as victims of their complaints.

4. Multimodal therapy & interdisciplinary collaboration

Teamwork is particularly important for chronic or recurring back pain: medical diagnosis, physiotherapeutic support, psychological support and - where appropriate - training therapy or occupational therapy.

At Hockenholz, we are linked to many regional networks and also advise colleagues who want to expand their practice offerings in a meaningful way.

Conclusion: Back pain is treatable - if we change our thinking

Non-specific back pain is not a trivial matter - but it is also no reason for resignation. Modern conservative therapy shows: With an individualized, movement-oriented and biopsychosocial approach, pain can be effectively alleviated, chronification prevented and people can regain their strength.
